Kenya

Kenya is one of Africa’s premier safari destinations, offering diverse landscapes, abundant wildlife, and unique cultural experiences. Located in East Africa, Kenya is renowned for its rich biodiversity and iconic national parks, making it a dream destination for nature lovers and adventurers. Here’s why Kenya stands out as a top safari destination:

About Kenya

Kenya is one of Africa’s top safari destinations, known for its diverse wildlife, stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and beautiful coastline. Here is essential information to help you plan your trip.

Visa Requirements

Starting January 2024, Kenya has become a visa-free country for all foreign nationals. This new policy aims to boost tourism and attract foreign investments by removing all visa requirements for visitors and those transiting through Kenya.

However, the visa-free regime has been replaced by the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, which requires all foreign nationals (excluding East African Community nationals) to register online at https://www.etakenya.go.ke at least 3 days before their visit. The ETA fee is $30 for all applicants, and travelers will need the following:

  • A valid passport
  • A credit or debit card to make the payment

This streamlined process makes it easier for international travelers to explore Kenya’s stunning landscapes and wildlife reserves.

Best Time for Kenya Safari

The best time to go on a safari in Kenya is during the dry season, which runs from June to October. This period is ideal for wildlife viewing, as animals are more concentrated around waterholes and rivers, making them easier to spot. The dry season also coincides with the Great Migration, when over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles move through the Masai Mara. The lack of rain ensures better road conditions, making travel between parks more convenient.

For bird watchers, the wet season, from November to May, is perfect for viewing migratory birds. Additionally, this is the time when many animals give birth, offering travelers a chance to witness newborns in their natural habitats. The landscape is lush and green, though some roads may become difficult to navigate after heavy rainfall.

Currency

Kenya’s currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). ATMs are widely available in cities, and most major hotels and lodges accept credit cards. Tipping is common in Kenya, with a standard rate of 10-15% in restaurants and daily tips for guides and drivers on safari.

Language

Kenya has two official languages: English and Swahili. Both are widely spoken, particularly in tourist areas, making communication relatively easy for most travelers.

Transportation

Kenya is well connected by air, with Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi serving as the main gateway. Domestic flights link major cities and safari destinations. Road travel is common, but the quality of roads can vary, and 4×4 vehicles are often necessary for safaris. Public transport options like buses and matatus (shared minibuses) are available for local travel but may be crowded.

Safety Tips

Kenya is generally safe for tourists, but it’s advisable to exercise caution in crowded areas and avoid walking alone at night, especially in cities. On safari, always follow the safety instructions given by guides and rangers to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Time Zone

Kenya operates on East Africa Time (EAT), which is UTC +3. The country does not observe daylight saving time.
