6 Days Mt Kilimanjaro Marangu Route

The 6-day Mount Kilimanjaro trek via the Marangu Route is an exciting journey to the roof of Africa. Known as the "Coca-Cola" route, Marangu is the only path on Kilimanjaro that offers hut accommodations, making it a popular choice for climbers. Starting at Marangu Gate, this trek passes through diverse ecosystems from lush rainforests, across moorlands, and into alpine desert before reaching the iconic snow-capped Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet).

Full itinerary

Starting from Moshi, you will take a one-hour drive to Marangu village, where your Kilimanjaro adventure begins. Upon arriving at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, you will prepare for the trek while permits are issued. The hike kicks off through the lush rainforest, featuring diverse flora and fauna, with your guide sharing insights about the local wildlife. The trail at these lower elevations can be slippery and muddy, so trekking poles and gaiters are recommended. After a full day, you will arrive at Mandara Huts to rest for the night.

The second day starts with breakfast as you ascend from the rainforest into the heathland. As the landscape changes, you'll encounter unique plants such as giant lobelias and groundsels. The trail leads you into the open moorlands, where you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Mawenzi peak. The day concludes at Horombo Huts, located beneath the towering Kibo summit. As you settle in for the night, temperatures begin to drop, reminding you of the altitude.

This day is dedicated to acclimatization. You can either rest at Horombo Huts or take a short hike to the base camp of Mawenzi. This extra day helps your body adjust to the altitude, improving your chances of reaching the summit. After a relaxing day, you’ll prepare for the next phase of your climb.

The ascent continues through the dwindling heathland, blending into a barren moonscape as you approach the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The scenery is vast and desolate, and the climb becomes more challenging as you make your way to Kibo Huts. After a short rest and lunch, you'll prepare for the final summit push, which begins in the early hours of the next day

The most exciting and challenging day of the trek begins just after midnight. With your headlamp lighting the way, you will ascend steep switchbacks through loose scree and possibly snow, making your way to Gillman’s Point on the crater rim. As you push toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, the sight of the sunrise from this vantage point will be unforgettable. After celebrating your accomplishment, the descent to Horombo Huts begins. You’ll stop briefly for lunch at Barafu before continuing to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.

After breakfast, you will begin your final descent to Marangu Gate, passing through the rainforest once more. A heartfelt ceremony of appreciation with your crew will take place, followed by goodbyes. Don’t forget to tip your guides, porters, and cooks as you collect your summit certificates. Afterward, a vehicle will take you back to Moshi for a well-deserved hot shower, dinner, and celebration of your incredible achievement.
